Robotaxis by metro · and when they beat a short EV rental
Driverless rides are real in most of our metros now. This is the availability picture as of 2026-08-13, sketched from operator announcements · service maps change monthly, so the operator app is always ground truth. Availability sketch, not fares · we book nothing.
When the robotaxi winsPoint-to-point days inside one city: no parking, no charging homework, no return rule. One or two hops a day clearly beat a $65+ day rate once parking and charging count · stack four or more rides and per-ride fares flip the math back toward the rental.
When the rental winsAnything past the geofence: Hill Country, Rainier, Red Rock, the Keys. Plus luggage days, child seats, and multi-stop errands. Airport curbs are still the exception · Waymo does Sky Harbor and SFO, Zoox reaches Harry Reid; most other terminals still mean a rideshare or the rental.
Rough fare shape · not quotesAs of mid-2026 reporting: Waymo ~$1.40-2.50/mi (typical ride ~$20) · Tesla Robotaxi ~$0.81/mi (typical ~$8) · Zoox prices a comfort tier above UberX, with airport destination fees in Vegas. All change without notice.
