  2. Photo the battery % and the odometer before you leave the lot.
  3. Mirror that % at return. That photo is the argument.

You've got an EV for the day. We will take the day with you.

Everyone comes to their first electric drive from somewhere different. Tell us where you are and we will match the help to you, nothing more.

You know your way around. We will surface only the two things worth a refresher on this exact car, then get out of your way and into the plan.

More help · the essentialsDial 2-3 · a glance

Not a manual. Just the few things about this car that surprise people, calibrated to where you put the dial.

It slows down when you lift off

the #1 surprise
Lift off the accelerator and this car brakes hard on its own. That is normal, and it is feeding range back into the battery (a real gift on long downhills). Ease off gently instead of stabbing the pedal. The brake still works exactly as normal for real stops. On this car regen cannot be turned off.

Watch the percent, not the miles

read it like a phone
Read the battery in percent, like your phone. Highway speed and cold both make the mile number optimistic. Below 20% start looking for a charger, try not to arrive under about 10%, and on the road stop at around 80% (the last 20% is slow and can cost you fees).

How to actually make it go

first 60 seconds
There is usually no start button. Most EVs just need the key or fob on you and a press of the brake to be ready, then you select Drive. Every brand does the shifter a little differently, so glance at the door card or the maker app for where Drive is on this one. And silence is normal, it is on even though you hear nothing.

If it steers or brakes on its own

safety
If the car ever steers or slows and you did not ask, you are in control instantly: press the brake or turn the wheel. It is an assistant, not a driver. Keep your eyes up and hands on.

Payload and towing cut range hard

A loaded bed trims range; a trailer can roughly halve it. If this trip tows anything, plan stops from battery percent, not the mile guess, and treat the first leg as your calibration run.

Every Lightning is a pure EV

Ford ended Lightning production after 2025 · the next electric F-150 is an EREV with a gas range extender, a different truck this coach does not cover. Every Lightning ever built is full battery-electric. If a listing says PowerBoost or mentions a gas engine, it is not this truck.

Pro Power outlets are the party trick · and a drain

Outlets in the bed and frunk can run tools, coolers, or a campsite straight off the pack. Anything left running keeps drawing after you park · check what is on before you walk away, and budget the percent if you power gear all day.

The console lever folds into a work surface

Drive is the console lever · on trims with the Interior Work Surface it folds flat and the lid extends into a desk for a laptop or lunch. Fold it back before you shift, and never force it.

The frunk is a second trunk

The power frunk is huge, lockable, and drainable · keep luggage there instead of the open bed. It opens from the button, the screen, or the fob, and closes itself · never slam it.

One-pedal is a setting

On Ford EVs one-pedal drive is a setting, not a given · it toggles in the drive modes. When on, lift-off slows hard like a Tesla. When off, it coasts more. Try it in a lot once so the first stop light is not a surprise.

First fifteen minutes

  1. Fob nearby, brake to ready, select Drive.
  2. Note whether one-pedal is on; lift off gently the first time.
  3. Walk away once and confirm lock before you trust it at a store.

Do these in the lot or a quiet street when you can. This is the calm before the day math.

The good stuff

Here is your day

The one calm layer that answers the only three questions that matter: will I make it, where do I stop, and how long there. Move the sliders and watch it recompute.

Stop times match the day verdict. Mountain trips name outbound and return legs. On non-Tesla public networks about 1 in 7 charge attempts still goes wrong · Superchargers fail far less. Not live stall availability.

Return Sunday

The desk sets the return % at pickup. Right now you are at about 70%. When in doubt, photograph the gauge at pickup and match it at return.

Target ask at pickup

Stays on this device for your records. We do not upload or store the photo.

Your return-charge target at drop-off

Ask whoever you rented from for their return-charge rule, and snap the gauge at pickup so there is never a dispute. Rules vary by desk. When in doubt, photograph the gauge at pickup and match it at return. You told us you return it Sunday.
Confirm the return % at pickup or in their app.

Tolls are real; the rental invoice is worse on toll roads

DFW and Austin run dense cashless toll networks (NTTA TollTag, TxTag-family, TEXpress, MoPac, SH 130). E-ZPass is not Texas. Many desks sell a daily toll package; without it you can get pay-by-plate plus a rental admin fee that dwarfs the actual toll. Ask at pickup whether a tag is on the car and how they bill, then decide before you hop a managed lane just this once.
Desk toll packages and admin fees change. Confirm this weekend with the company.

DFW is several cities wearing one hat across DFW

Plano to Fort Worth is not across town. Unplanned hops turn into Supercharger literacy homework. Pin a primary and backup stall per leg, and treat DFW Airport returns like a separate mission: SOC first, terminal second.

Airport return: charge on the way in, not the loop near DFW / DAL

DFW's scale punishes "I'll just find a charger at the airport." Use corridor Superchargers on the approach (or your last suburb stop), photograph SOC, then enter the rental return. Same idea for DAL Love Field at smaller scale.

Move your car when it is done when charging finishes

The moment charging completes, an idle fee can start ($0.40 to $1.00 per minute), and a busy Supercharger adds a congestion fee. There is usually a 5 minute grace to unplug. This is exactly why we nudge you to stop at 80% and walk back before it finishes.
A real build fires this from a charge-complete signal or your typed-in percent.
Charging complete at 80%. Move within about 5 minutes to avoid a $0.40 to $1.00 per minute idle fee. Desk return is ask at pickup; idle is separate.
